The History of FRSecure
FRSecure was founded in early 2008 by Evan Francen and two business partners. Today Evan serves as the company’s managing partner, and his direction drives much of our business. Although FRSecure became a formal business entity in 2008, its roots can be found as far back as 1993. 1993 was the year that Evan began his information security career (See Evan’s BIO). In order to best understand the history of FRSecure, it might be helpful to understand the history behind one of its founders.
The early years, 1993 – 2000Do you remember the mid-90s? The mid-90s saw great advancements in computing. People were beginning to share information like no other time in history. Operating systems and applications were created with exciting new features like Internet browsing, email, word processing, and instant messaging. The problem was (and often still is) that information security was an afterthought. The free flow of information brought many risks to the confidentiality and integrity of sensitive information. Information as an asset was being considered by only a few organizations.
In 1993, Evan began his career as an information security consultant working to educate clients about the need for securing information assets. Many companies were beginning to migrate from physical (paper) to electronic information storage and transfer. You may remember Novell NetWare (v4), Windows NT 3.1, Microsoft Office 4.0, etc. Information security, as a profession, was in its infancy. Basic protections such as firewalls were not common and you were considered “cutting-edge” if you had a website. In these years, the bad guys had all of the advantages. Everybody was in a race to capitalize on opportunities, and information security was often viewed as something that got in the way of progress.
Coming of age, 2000 – 2008All things “IT” were growing at a tremendous rate around the turn of the century. Everybody was in a rush to capitalize on newer and better ways to do things. Most companies had websites, and many even had ecommerce sites. It seemed like information was being shared between everybody, all of the time. Information security was starting to gain in popularity because of well-known viruses and Y2K. Viruses were mainly viewed as nuisances, and Y2K was; well Y2K. Ensuring the availability of information assets still far outweighed the importance of protecting information confidentiality and/or integrity. At the turn of the century there were very few dedicated information security professionals. In general, companies were still trying to grasp an understanding of electronic information value.
The year 2000 was the year that Evan became the Information Security/Network Services Manager at Jasc Software (later acquired by Corel Corporation). Most people know Jasc Software better by their #1 product, Paint Shop Pro. Jasc was a company that relied heavily on the Internet with over 93 million web site hits, 28 million trial downloads, and 139,000 ecommerce orders per month. Security of the company’s information assets was critical to the sustainability and success of the business. Evan designed, implemented and managed all aspects of information security for Jasc Software from early 2000 through 2005 when it was acquired by Corel.
Between the years of 2005 through 2009 Evan has worked on and led a number of information security projects and initiatives, including:
- Served as a Data Security Consultant on the U.S. Bank Threat and Vulnerability team,
- Design and implemented a project for deploying encryption to 46,000 UnitedHealth laptops globally,
- Served as Director of Information Security for a publicly-traded SaaS company, at which he developed, implemented and supported their first formal information security program,
- Served as Director of Information Security for a publicly-traded pharmaceutical company, at which he developed, implemented, and supported their first information security program, and;
- Served as a consultant in numerous mergers and acquisitions.
A new era, 2009 and beyond
There are still too few well-trained professionals who understand business AND information security. Although, the information security industry has come a long way since the mid-1990s, there is far too much information exposed to unacceptable risk.
After the acquisition of MGI PHARMA by Eisai in 2008-2009, Evan and his partners formed FRSecure. FRSecure was born out of the desire to help small to medium-sized companies understand and manage information security risk.
The information security landscape is confusing to most people.FRSecure grew out of the desire to educate business leaders, IT professionals, and everyday people about the importance of information security. We help organizations identify information security needs, and integrate information security principles into business practices. Our solutions are efficient and effective in helping companies reach their information security goals. Read FRSecure’s Guiding Principles.
Since our founding in 2008, FRSecure has helped over 30 organizations with their information security challenges, and we look forward to helping many more in the coming years!
