Building an information security program

…is like assembling a jigsaw puzzle.

We use this analogy often. It helps us simplify the concepts behind how we build an information security program. People don’t relate well to building an information security program, but most can relate to assembling a jigsaw puzzle.

First, the steps in putting together a jigsaw puzzle:

     1. Open the puzzle box and remove the puzzle pieces.
     2. Spread puzzle pieces out, face up, on a large table or flat surface.
     3. Separate the edge and corner pieces and put the border together using the picture on the box lid as a guideline.
     4. Divide the remaining “inner” pieces and organize in groups with similar colors or letters. Any words or graphics will be easier to put together.
     5. Start placing similar pieces together until they fit and begin to form clusters–small parts of the larger picture.
     6. Connect clusters together once you can and keep looking at the box lid picture to find the locations of the groups of pieces.
     7. Finish the puzzle, connecting all pieces together.

Once your puzzle is complete, it should resemble the picture on the box lid. All pieces fit together perfectly, there are no gaps (missing pieces) and all pieces are used.
